Saying Goodbye to Iconic St. Croix Jewelry Designer Sonya Hough

Iconic St. Croix jewelry designer Sonya Hough died in March 2025. A dear friend of June Qualls, the inspiration behind Drinking Dresses, Sonya's legacy lives on as the originator/designer/maker of the original St. Croix Hook Bracelet.

Sonya, founder of Sonya ltd on Company Street in Christiansted, created many original pieces of jewelry - all hand hammered of the finest gold and silver. While most of her designs are not as well known as her St. Croix aka Cruzan Hook Bracelet with its two toned silver and gold design, I’m honored to own a several of her unique bracelets including a couple of simple hand hammered silver bangles not originally offered in the line.

My mother in law, June Qualls, understood my preferred jewelry metal is and was Sterling so she commissioned a couple for me back in the early 80’s.

Sonya and June enjoyed donning their Drinking Dresses for regular 5 pm cocktails, always sporting several bracelets and earrings! We are honored to enjoy them still 40 years later, of course while our Drinking Dresses.

The fourth Qualls generation - all young men- are now acquiring their own Cruzan Hooks from the little “Corner Shop” in Christiansted! They’re the perfect complement for any well dressed person who enjoys celebrating a touch of island life anytime, any place.

We imagine June and Sonya are elegantly attired, sparkling in Sonya originals enjoying their evening drinks together again.
